No less than 17 men including a lady were allegedly nailed to crosses in the Philippines in a demonstration of commitment to re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday.
In San Fernando City, Pampanga territory, several tourists watched in stun as actors dressed as Roman warriors hammered four-inch nails through the hands and feet of Filipinos into a wooden cross for the 33rd time.
“I thought they wouldn’t be nailed but they were really nailed, and it was for me a great event to see it live,” said German tourist Johann Tenken.
Devotees, including 58-year old Ruben Enaje who has played out the demonstration multiple times, trust their repentance will wash away their wrongdoings, cure illness and lead to blessing.
Enaje was among the four people who were nailed to crosses in the village, including a woman taking part for the 17th time.
Five different Filipinos were nailed to crosses in two different towns in Pampanga.
“At the end of the day, you need to respect the people doing this since that is a commitment,” said Filipino tourist Bianca Yao.
